10 Things To Do Instead of Checking Your Phone

10 Things to do
Instead of Checking Your Phone

A wise man (Sreedhar Potarazu) once said social media is like a dangerous street corner kids can hang out on without ever leaving their rooms. Well, in so many words of course. But, the statement still holds true.

Practically everyone this day and age has a smartphone, and they're all glued to it. My two-year-old niece can operate Snapchat, and take selfies all by herself. Are kids really that advanced now? Or are we spending too much time on our phones?

I honestly think it's a little bit of both. We have become so dependent on cellular phones that we've forgotten how to actually interact as humans. Everything is so digital today.

What ever happened to hanging out on an actual street corner? What ever happened to riding bikes down the street to your friends house? What happened to lemonade stands ? Face to face conversations? Actually shopping in a department store ?

It's time we slowly start getting back to our old ways. I'm not saying completely do away with the cellphones, but at least for some part of your day take time to do something other than check your phone.

Below I've provided a list of 10 (really fun) things you can do instead of checking your phone.

1. Go watch a movie!
And no, I don't mean on Netflix. Actually get off of your couch, get out of your house and go watch a movie the old-fashioned way. Sure movie tickets are sky-high, popcorn prices are outrageous, and the person behind you keeps putting their feet on the back of your chair, but it'll be worth it in the end.

2. Go for a walk.
It's starting to get warmer outside, and it gives you an excuse to buy new running shoes. Who doesn't like Nikes? While you're walking take in the scenery around you. Take time to appreciate the things you see on your journey. Who knows you might accidentally walk into your future husband or something.

3. Work out.
Okay, so this kind of goes along with #2, but who cares? Spring Break is quickly approaching and there's no such thing as too much exercise when it comes to that new beach bod!

4. Rearrange your room/living room.
I'm all about the fung shui. It's like Spring cleaning 2.0. My mother makes a point to rearrange her living room every season to keep it "balanced" and "in harmony". Her words not mine people. So take the time to move some stuff around. You'll be surprised how great you feel afterwards.

5. Do-It-Yourself.
D-I-Y Projects are my absolute favorite. For the most part they don't take that long to complete, unless you're like reupholstering something, and they are tons of fun! Sometimes my roommates and I just get together and have a D-I-Y party. It's corny, but it's a great bonding experience. Don't know where to start? Pinterest has a ton of projects.

6. Study.
If you're a college student like me, there's nothing you want to do more than study. 'Cause studying is so fun, and learning is a beautiful thing. Can you see the sarcasm dripping from these words? No one wants to do it, but it has to be done so instead of picking up that phone, pick up a book. (Which brings me to my next item.)

7. Read a book.
A wise man once said, "if you want to hide something, put it in a book." I love reading. There's so much you can learn about different cultures, and history by just opening a book. There are also pretty entertaining by the way.

8. Find a hobby.
How do you know what you love to do if you never try anything? Put down that phone and find something you love.

9. Color.
I know what you're thinking, "I'm too old to color." Coloring is actually a growing trend among adults. It's stress-free and relaxing. So head down to the local Walmart and grab a coloring book along with a 74-pack of crayons (with the sharpener).

10. Spend time with your family and friends
Here's an idea; the next time you go out to eat with your family or friends place everyone's phone on ring and put them in the center of the table. The first person to grab their phone buys everyone dinner. No one is going to want to cover the bill, and conversation will be inevitable.
